Job Summary

  • International Medical Corps (IMC), in collaboration with the Harvard School of Public Health (USA) and Epicentre (France), will be supporting a research study, “Reducing the frequency of follow up and task sharing in the treatment of uncomplicated severe acute malnutrition.”
  • The aim of the research study is to test a new model of care, using a monthly schedule of follow-up with caregiver support for at-home surveillance in the treatment of uncomplicated severe acute malnutrition (SAM). The research study will be conducted in Sokoto state (Wamako and Binji LGAs) beginning in June 2017.
  • IMC seeks to recruit Study Nutrition Assistant to implement study activities at selected health centers. Study Nutrition Assistants will be responsible for the correct implementation of study procedures at the study site and coordination with study and partner staff (IMC and SMoH) to ensure proper application of the study protocol and national CMAM guidelines.
  • This position will be based at a single outpatient therapeutic program (OTP) site but can include travel to community locations as needed.

Main Responsibilities

  • Contribute to study activities, with the support and supervision of study nurses, including but not limited to:
    • Deliver educational sessions for caregiver home surveillance (5 sites with monthly follow-up only)
    • Assure adherence to correct schedule of outpatient follow-up (e.g. monthly vs. weekly) as per site assignment

Qualification and Experience

  • B.Sc in Community Health Extension or any degree in Food Science and other related Natural Sciences and over One (1)years’ experience in nutrition/CMAM programming.
  • Junior community health extension worker with over three (3) years’ experience in CMAM programmes

  • Fluent in written and spoken English and Hausa

Background

  • International Medical Corps has been operating in Nigeria since November 2013. It currently has its country office in Abuja and field offices in Kano, Sokoto, Damboa , Dikwa and Maiduguri where it is implementing emergency Water, Sanitation, Hygiene (WASH) and Protection programs, and also building capacity of local health systems and structures, ensuring the provision of quality, accessible Nutrition and Health Care. Currently IMC Nigeria has 7 field offices with more than 200 staff with a possibility of further growth.

Job Summary

  • The incumbents will be responsible for implementation of CMAM/IYCF in collaboration with other nutrition staff.
  • They will facilitate good practice and ensure compliance to applicable implementation guidelines.

Main Responsibilities

  • The IYCF Supervisor will coordinate activities at the local level and supervising the CGP and all IYCF activities in the implementation site. Maintain cooperation with other institutions at community level such as the village council, Sheiks, Traditional Healers, and TBA, Meet with the local leadership committee in each community bi-weekly for coordination, monitoring and evaluation, identify CG capacities and coordinate trainings based on need and program goals, Play Models leadership to all CG and intentionally develops the leadership potential of the CG and Prepare a monthly report using the information provided by Care Group mothers.
  • Facilitate organized, participatory learning sessions with each of their 10-12 CG Volunteers (in Care Groups) groups every two weeks, following the lesson plans in the educational materials provided.
  • Attend Bi-Weekly Training and Reporting Meetings provided by the CG Promoter Supervisor and the Module Training Sessions to accurately replicate trainings received with CG Volunteers, sharing correct information and demonstrating skills learned.
  • Model the health, nutrition, and sanitation behaviors they are teaching to CG Volunteers in their own homes, located in the community.
  • Visit, monitor, and evaluate each CG Volunteer at least monthly. Supervise the work of CG Volunteers by accompanying them on home visits to Neighbor Women and observing them providing group instruction.
  • Assist with other program activities such as: National Vaccination Days, distribution of Vitamin A and de-worming medicine, weighing of children <5years of age, etc.
  • This is a community based position and requiring frequently traveling within community locations.
  • Ensure observance and respect the dignity of beneficiaries, careers and members of the community at all times.
  • Coordinate activities at the local level and maintain cooperation with other institutions at community level such as the village council, Sheiks, Traditional healers and TBAs.
  • Meet with the local leadership committee in each community bi-weekly for coordination, monitoring and evaluation.
  • Attend training and coordination meetings at the LGA office, providing verbal and written reports of activities completed.
  • Collect CG reports on a monthly basis, review the reports and assure the information presented is reasonable and complete.

  • Maintain a filing system in the project office so copies of CG mothers Reports are easily accessible.
  • Responsible to supervise each CG mothers who reports to her in the field at least twice a month.

Qualification and Experience

  • B.Sc in Nutrition or B.Sc Nursing or equivalent qualification in any recognized institution
  • Diploma in Nutrition or any health related course with 3 years of experiences in CMAM/IYCF activities.

  • Good inter personal skills

  • Work with Gender advisor in identifying gender barriers to positive MNCH outcomes and addressing them through BCC interventions, including supporting the gender responsive referral process.
  • Work with VSLA coordinator to implement community component of VSLA strategy.
  • Work with service delivery facilitators to strengthen linkages and ensure alignment of demand and supply side interventions, including addressing demand/supply side issues.
  • Work with and support WDCs and other stakeholders to ensure safe spaces for greater participation of women and adolescent in decision making around MNCH issues, including the development and implementation of advocacy and community mobilization packages and plans and sustainability of community interventions.
  • Maintain good relationship with the local traditional and religious leaders, NURTW, Ward development committees and women and men social groups.
  • Assume any other responsibility as assigned by the Supervisor or the National Project Director

Qualifications and Experience

  • A First Degree in Social Sciences/Arts or Communication from a recognized higher institution.
  • Experience facilitating focus group discussions and other community participatory processes, including trainings.
  • Knowledge and experience with some donor program frameworks and approaches will be an added advantage.
  • The position will require 50% of time spent in the Local Government Areas and communities.
  • At least 3 years’ practical work experience in the area of social and behaviour change communication and public relations of public health programs especially MNCH programs.
  • Experience working with PHC workers, local communities, Ward development communities and social groups.

  • Abt Associates seeks a qualified Project Assistant to support the International Health Division in Nigeria.
  • The global USAID-funded Health Finance and Governance (HFG) project helps to improve health in developing countries by expanding people’s access to health care.
  • Led by Abt Associates, the project team works with partner countries to increase their domestic resources for health, manage those precious resources more effectively, and make wise purchasing decisions.
  • HFG Nigeria seeks two state program coordinators to coordinate HFG’s activities on Health Care Financing for RMNCH in two of USAID’s focus states, Bauchi and Sokoto, respectively. The areas of work include assessment of the adequacy of infrastructure and health workers in public health facilities to carry out key MNCH, Family Planning (FP), and Reproductive Health (RH) interventions; implementation of core analytics to develop state-specific health care financing strategies; strengthen governance systems and improve health financing functions.  The coordinator will track the progress of HFG activities in the state and intervene where necessary to facilitate and maintain progress.
  • The Project Assistants will report to the Chief of Party. These positions are located in Bauchi and Sokoto States Nigeria.
  • As a result, this six-year global project increases the use of both primary and priority health services, including HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria, and reproductive health services.
  • Designed to fundamentally strengthen health systems, HFG will support countries as they navigate the economic transitions needed to achieve universal health care. HFG is working in more than 20 countries worldwide, including Nigeria.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Coordination of HFG-Nigeria health financing activities in the state (liaising with team in Abuja and Bethesda)
  • Responsible for engaging, coordinating and communicating with stakeholders and partners working on health financing at the State-level. Track the progress of HFG activities in the state and intervene where necessary to facilitate and maintain progress
  • Lead the Capacity Building efforts, field work, quality assurance and reporting of LGA MNCH/FP/RH Service Delivery Readiness Assessment in Bauchi and Sokoto States.
  • Support activities of project health finance specialists and consultants in the state towards:
    • successful completion of health care financing core diagnostics,
    • design of a mix of state specific healthcare financing mechanisms,
    • and other HF activities by the project in the state
  • Coordinate activities in state towards the strengthening of health financing institutional capacity through the establishment of health care financing technical working groups (TWGs) and health financing units and provide support towards optimal function of these structures.
  • Represent HFG at various health care financing fora at state level, including but not limited to the TWGs
  • Identify and contribute to documentation of HFG’s lessons learned success stories
  • Write and submit detailed and good quality weekly and monthly activities report using agreed templates
  • Participate in other project related activities as advised by the COP

Preferred Skills / Prerequisites

  • Graduate Degree in Public Health, Public Administration, Management or related discipline, or equivalent experience.
  • At least 5 years senior level work experience in health program management in developing countries, or equivalent.
  • Experience working on a donor funded RMNCH/FP program is preferred.
  • Previous supervision or team leader experience.
  • Understanding of USAID and field Missions; USG audiences, trends and requirements.
  • Proven programmatic, technical and managerial expertise in providing support to institutions to strengthen their management and/or leadership capacity, systems and processes, and sustainability potential.
  • Demonstrated capacity to collaborate with colleagues, teams and partner organizations to achieve results.
  • Strong interpersonal and organizational skills.
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills.
  • Computer skills: Windows applications for word processing and spreadsheet software.
  • Demonstrated leadership and capacity to oversee USAID-funded (sub) projects.

Minimum Qualification:

  • 3+ years of experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience.
