MAKING IMPACTS IN YOUR PLACE OF WORK

Making impacts in your place of work is the first key to building a career in any particular field. Even if you work online from home, making impact is a first step to building your career. If we are more interested in not just surviving but thriving, it is important we work towards making impact. Its easy to note that once you are not making yourself of importance, you are then, fading into the background. This can happen either by being shy, difficulty in making your voice heard, uncertain about how your ideas will be taken or your just got more assertive colleagues that always bump forward when anything comes up.

Make a difference. Let the world feel like a better place as a result of your work.
Let us go thorugh a couple of ways by which you can begin to make impact at your place of work and build your career.

1. BE CONNECTED

Making Impacts

For newbies to a particular place of work, it is up to you to connect with those you meet around you. Check out for those that are the high flyers already and connect but do make sure to pick a lesson from everyone. Watch and learn, listen more and talk less. By this, you will get more information reaching you than you can imagine. Also, seek connections outside your immediate work team, from a wider organisation. Just make sure to keep making the connections wider daily.

2. BE A GOOD COLLEAGUE

Be a good colleague

Be the one that everyone is comfortable to be with. Easy going and still, receptive. Try as much as possible to be supportive to everyone and work teams outside your own immediate team. By this, others can always share with and seek opinions from you.

3. BE PREPARED

BE PREPARED
Remember to always stay on step ahead. This is a major key. When there is a meeting, a project defence, or a field exercise, try to stay ahead of your game by solving problems and bringing reasonable solutions to the table. This renders you as being resourceful. Being prepared always keeps you tension-free, relaxed and effective.

4. DISCIPLINES

Develop your own routines and stick to them. Create time for extra revision or study. Make it a routine. Having routine for everything you do is a great form to discipline.

5. BE NEUTRAL

Never you take sides at your place of work. Although, it is rather difficult to appear neutral all the time, but, once we mix up with groupings, we end up losing our professionalism which was the main reason why we got there in the first instance. Once you can stay away from gossip groups and rumour mills, you will be seen as someone who is trustworthy and independent.

6. BRING YOUR UNIQUE VALUE

No one grew up with the same experience and even for siblings, experiences produces different results in them. Check yourself out for that unique value, bring it out and stay true to it. Let that uniqueness stand you out.

7. BUILD A REPUTATION OF TRUST AND RELIABILITY

Always accept to do what is achievable for you. Let your words be taken for who you are. If you for hardwork’s sake pick up jobs you know you may not finish before the deadline and fail, you will be termed as imcompetent but if you take up tasks gradually and finish them before deadline, you will be seen as been very effective and reliable when it comes to delivery. Also, build trust among colleagues. Inspire confidence among them.

8. LEARNING

Keep Learning
Keep learning. Albert Einstein once said,’when you stop learning, you start dying’. We all learn but some of us learn more and faster than others. This is where you surpass your colleagues. Learn more than everyone else. Take extra courses, schedule extra hours of learning on a routine basis. Be the best at what ever you learn and make impact.

Asides the above points, there are also a few other points that are somewhat neglected by some people but have a great role to play in seperating you from others.

1. DISPLAY A PROFESSIONAL IMAGE

By wearing clean, stylish and well-tailored clothing to the office, you show a sense of being well-organized. Wear something that sets you apart. You could have your own signature color or tie or a general dress sense but do not stay away from the company dress code.

2. STAY TRUE TO YOURSELF

Stand in whatever you believe in. Even if others disagree, just be sure to stand by your beliefs and have facts and points to prove yourself. Make sure you do not sound argumentative or stubborn or rebellious.

UP-TIPS

Display yourself as someone who fits the role you desire deep within. Lets take for instance, you want to be the GM, putting on clean, welll-tailored suits with matching ties all the time, start it from your current position. This builds a self confidence towards where you want to be within you. Be a great networker. Utilize websites like linkedin.

DOWN-TIPS

While trying to stand out, do not step on others’ toes. Learn to be a force of encouragement and support to your colleagues. Avoid gossips, office politics, etc

The above point may not be generic but it will sure work if you want to be Making impacts in your place of work.
